DON’TS for Female Solo Travelers

As you probably already know, I love solo traveling. This month in Italy, I met a few other female solo travelers so I decided to write a post that hopefully will be helpful to any girlies out there who are looking to get started on their solo travel journey.

After traveling to 12 cities as a female solo traveler, I have made unforgettable memories but I’ve also learned some hard lessons. Let’s be honest, everything is new and exciting when you start solo traveling until you feel unsafe. It can really put a damper on your mood and end up affecting your trip – and we don’t want that!

So, I have listed my top 5 don’ts to help you stay safe & happy while traveling the world:

#1 – DON’T IGNORE YOUR GUT FEELING

Our instincts are made to protect us and keep us safe. Please do not ignore your gut feeling! If you think something is fishy or if you are not feeling safe, ask for help or go to a safe place. Your safety should always take priority!

#2- DON’T HAVE MORE THAN TWO DRINKS IF YOU GO TO A BAR OR A CLUB ALONE

As a solo traveler, I have gone to clubs and bars alone and I have had good and bad experiences. Like last New Year’s Eve in Copenhagen – where people were extremely drunk. Do I recommend going out alone once? YES, just because I believe in trying new things and stepping out of your conform zone. That being said, please make sure always have an eye on your drink and don’t have more than two drinks. Let’s be safe out there ladies!

#3 – DON’T POST LIVE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

It does not matter how big or small your account is, if you have a public social media account don’t post live. I’m telling you this because I got recognized in Amsterdam at a restaurant after I posted an Instagram story – I had 4,500 followers at the time. This shows that anyone can get recognized and at that point if you’ve posted about solo traveling, they know you’re alone. I was literally shaking in my boots! Be safe, post after you have already left the location.

#4- DON’T TELL PEOPLE YOU’RE ALONE

I never thought this would happen before I started traveling alone but random people always ask me if I’m alone or if I’m traveling alone – I know! It’s creepy, right? My answer is always “No, my friends are coming to meet me soon” or ” No, my boyfriend is on his way”. I’m sure most people are just curious but when you are alone as a female you have to try to protect yourself as much as possible.

#5- DON’T PUT ALL OF YOUR FUNDS IN ONE PLACE

When you are a solo traveler you can only rely on yourself. So, I always encourage solo travelers to bring cash and at least a couple credit cards while traveling. It’s important to split where your money goes just in case something gets stolen or lost. Don’t take all of your cash and credit cards when you go out, especially if you’re going to a busy touristy area or a club.

Don’t forget that staying safe should always be part of your travel plans 🙂

Happy traveling!

XO, Bobbi
